What Are Human Rights?

Human rights are fundamental rights and freedoms that belong to every person.

Human rights are the basic rights and freedoms that belong to every person, from birth, simply because they are human. They do not depend on nationality, religion, gender, ethnicity, income or any other status.

Where they come from

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948, set out these rights for the first time as a common standard for all peoples and nations. Bangladesh's Constitution also guarantees fundamental rights to its citizens.

Examples of human rights

  • The right to life, liberty and security of person
  • Equality before the law and equal protection of the law
  • Freedom from torture and cruel or degrading treatment
  • Freedom of thought, conscience and religion
  • The right to education and to work
